Land & Impact · Held & Healed Animal Sanctuary
Regenerative stewardship on the sanctuary land
Land & impact

Healing the land is part of healing the animals.

Held & Healed is becoming a climate sanctuary: a place where rescued animals and the land they live on are restored together. What that means
Animals and land at the sanctuary in harmony
A newer approach to land conservation

What is a climate sanctuary?

A place where compassion for animals is woven together with ecological restoration and climate resilience.

Rescued animals live out their lives here as residents, never as products. The land is cared for so it grows healthier every year: richer soil, more wildlife, smarter use of water and resources.

Nothing here is raised for sale. What the land gives back is a healthier ecosystem, a community better prepared for a changing climate, and a hopeful model others can follow.

How it's different

"Climate sanctuary" is an emerging idea, and Held & Healed is one of the early places helping shape what it means.
How we care for the land

Stewardship, every day

Rebuilding soil

Composting food scraps and the residents' manure turns waste into living soil. We teach it too, through our Bokashi, biochar and manure composting workshops.

Bringing back biodiversity

Making room for native plants, pollinators and wildlife, so the land supports more life every season.

Using resources wisely

Caring for water and resources responsibly, so the sanctuary can thrive through drought and heat.

Animals as part of the ecosystem

The residents aren't tools of the land; they're part of its community, cared for through old age and illness.

Hands-on stewardship

Volunteers, neighbors and families working the land together, building a community ready for what's ahead.

Raising the next generation

Teaching children to protect all life with responsibility, reverence and heart, starting with our own.
